The Power in Words…and Bookstores

We were so excited and thankful when we learned that one of our favorite author friends, New York Times Times Bestselling writer, Elizabeth Acevedo, chose our MahoganyBooks to film this dope homage to her Afro-Dominican roots. Humble, gifted and loved, Acevedo is the author of The Poet X and With the Fire on High, two international sensations.

Thank you for choosing us as your event host for the filming of this video and to the PopSugar team who were a joy to work with.

In 2019, Ms. Acevedo received two awards for her book, The Poet X. The first was the CILIP Carnegie Medal. Acevedo is the first writer of color to win this prestigious UK award in it’s 83-year history. During her acceptance speech of what inspired her to write the book, Acevedo said “…this student gave me permission to write a story about young people who take up space, who do not make themselves small, who learn the power of their own words.”

She was also awarded the Amelia Elizabeth Walden Book Award for Young Adult Fiction.

Liz’s New Joint

Book Synopsis

Ever since she got pregnant freshman year, Emoni Santiago’s life has been about making the tough decisions–doing what has to be done for her daughter and her abuela. The one place she can let all that go is in the kitchen, where she adds a little something magical to everything she cooks, turning her food into straight-up goodness.

Even though she dreams of working as a chef after she graduates, Emoni knows that it’s not worth her time to pursue the impossible. Yet despite the rules she thinks she has to play by, once Emoni starts cooking, her only choice is to let her talent break free.
