Book Launch Event for District of Columbia Teen Author Sasha Ariel Alston
STEM-focused Book Inspires Girls to Dream Big
Washington, D.C. (August 15, 2017) Teen author Sasha Ariel Alston will officially launch her STEM-focused (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math), children’s book, Sasha Savvy Loves to Code, on August 26, 2017. She was inspired to write the book after she completed her first internship at Microsoft, while attending McKinley Technology High School in D.C., Sasha states, “This book is based on a lot of things I’ve experienced but through the eyes of a 10-year-old. I hope the book will inspire girls to pursue opportunities in both the STEM and publishing industries.”
According to a National Girls Collaborative Project study, girls and boys do not significantly differ in their abilities in math and science but do differ in their interest and confidence in STEM. “I want to make a difference and show girls, just like me, they can do anything they want.” stated Sasha.
Sasha published her book through a successful Kickstarter campaign raising nearly $18,000.00. She has sold over 1,200 books since the June 2 release date, sharing her message with children, educators, parents, and organizations globally.
In partnership with In3DC, Sasha will host her launch celebration later this month with several of her supporters, close friends, and family. In3DC is D.C.’s first community space dedicated to inclusion, innovation, and incubation. “We love Sasha’s book and the way she is passionate about technology and inspiring the best and brightest young minds,” stated KellyAnn Kirkpatrick, Program Manager, In3DC.
The event will also celebrate Sasha’s recent appearance on Good Morning America which launched her participation in Disney’s “Dream Big, Princess Photo Campaign.” The campaign highlights stories “to inspire girls and kids around the world to realize their full potential and dream big.”
All ages are welcome to attend the event but space is limited. A Representative from the Office of Councilmember McDuffie will provide commemorative remarks at the celebration which will include a book signing facilitated by MahoganyBooks.

About the book: Sasha Tech Savvy Loves to Code by Sasha Ariel Alston, is a children’s chapter book (ages 7-10). The main character, Sasha Savvy, is a super smart, 10-year old, African-American girl, who lives in Washington, D.C. Sasha must choose which class to take for summer camp and decides to give coding camp a chance. Sasha’s mom, a software developer, gives her a unique formula to help her remember how to code. However, will the formula be enough to get her through a challenging first day of camp with bugs (computing errors) everywhere?
About Sasha Ariel Alston: Sasha Ariel Alston, known as the STEM Queen, is the teen author of the children’s book Sasha Savvy Loves to Code. A Washington, D.C. native, she is currently a college student majoring in Information Systems at Pace University, Lubin School of Business in New York. With successful information technology and business internships at Infor, Microsoft, Everfi, the U.S. Department of Commerce, Many Mentors, and the National Academy Foundation, she is a sought-after speaker encouraging youth, especially girls of color, to pursue educational and career opportunities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).
