WATCH | A Book Club Discussion with a Special Guest

It was a goal that we’ve always held closely amongst ourselves. From the very early days of MahoganyBooks founding we dared to dream of the day that we would host President Barack Obama for a book event. As time passed we became bolder and began to speak out loud our goal to family and friends. We hoped… We inquired… We proposed… We never gave up on our dream.

Then on January 26, 2021 MahoganyBooks hosted President Barack Obama for a book club discussion of his new book A Promised Land. Yup, the MahoganyBooks | Very Smart Brothas book club joined the former President for an authentic conversation about staying optimistic against daunting odds, grinding your way to success, and yes, the fabulous fashion sense of the former First Lady, Michelle Obama.

Check out the short cut of the book discussion above and watch the faces of our book club members as they found out that special guest at this months discussion was actually the former President of the United States. It was an incredible joy not only to read A Promised Land and to have a conversation with President Obama about his book, but most important was the opportunity to be a conduit to create this experience for our community.

Whether it was a book club discussion that featured intense disagreement around Kendi’s How to be an Antiracist or insightful learning from bell hooks’ All About Love, the MahoganyBooks | Very Smart Brothas book club is all about building community, providing access to incredible books centered around Black people, and empowering one another.
