MahoganyBooks Sponsors DMV Battle of the Books

MahoganyBooks was thrilled to sponsor this enthusiastic academic competition held on October 27, 2019 in Fort Washington, MD. The main purpose of the DMV Battle of the Books, also referred to as DMVBOB, is to expose youth to authors of color.

DMVBOB’s inclusive event was open to all youth grades 1 through 12 whether they attended public, private or homeschooled.

Students were required to register between June 24-July 21, 2019, forming teams of 4 to 6 in their respective age group. After reading and comprehending a pre-selected book provided on DMVBOB’s list, students would attend the October battle to exhibit their knowledge of the book.

The competition was judged on the following criteria: 1) Question and Answer, 2) Team Spirit wear, 3) Oratorical Presentations, 4) Spelling Bee and 5) Debates (for high school students only). This is a true testament to the mission of DMVBOB to improve reading comprehension, public speaking skills, spelling, while also teaching teamwork and sportsmanship.

In addition to winning prizes, students took part in an art contest, S.T.E.M. activities, face painting, Build-A-Bracelet, an inflatable joust, and an AFROpreneur Marketplace. MahoganyBooks is always eager to support events that “meet the literary needs of readers in search of books written for, by, or about people of the African Diaspora.”
